We are once again so pleased to collaborate with our neighbor, the Bull Street Library. For this workshop we are extending a special invite to Tweens and Teens to join us at the Bull Street Library to learn how to upcycle plastic grocery bags to make sleeping mats for the homeless and to help decrease the 500 billion single-use plastic bags that are tossed in waterways and landfills each year!

This project is part of a larger ongoing national project where communities and crafters are coming together to create these bedroll mats for members of their community and for the environment. It was brought to our attention in 2020 by one of our Docents, Julie Gillart who is a member of MStarArts.org, headed by Carol Greenberg who introduced the project to Savannah and has garnered the assistance of individuals and group volunteers e.g., Messiah Lutheran Church, St Paul CME Church to deliver mats to Union Mission and distribute mats directly to those experiencing homelessness. These durable mats are more sanitary than blankets and lightweight, so they can easily be rolled and transported with attached handles. The important thing is most shelters permit these mats because they do not get water-logged, mildewed, or bug-infested, and they can be washed.

We are reaching out to our tweens & teens since so many of them around the world have taken action and interest in these critical issues but perhaps some may feel there is nothing they can do. This is an opportunity to impact two serious issues and get your friends, family, neighbors, etc. to join you! There is limited seating for the workshop, but it will be live-streamed on Facebook. Also, we offered this workshop for Earth Day 2020 as a Do-It-Yourself workshop during the Covid Lockdown. You can follow this link for more info and instructions:
